Module - Solar Response
Lahaina faces intense western sun — the same conditions that intensified the 2023 fire. The three-module assembly operates as a solar protection system: the steep 45-degree roof pitch deflects high-angle midday sun; adjacent shading modules block low-angle western afternoon sun; and the 8-foot wall height below the roof maintains shaded interior volume.
Performance
| Strategy | Effect |
|---|---|
| Steep roof pitch (~45°) | Deflects high-angle midday sun |
| Adjacent shading modules | Block low-angle western afternoon sun |
| Thatching / breathable roof | Reduces radiant heat transfer |
| 8’ wall height below roof | Maintains shaded interior volume |
| Estimated HVAC reduction | ~50% |
| Annual energy savings | $25,000–$35,000 |
At no point does direct western sunlight penetrate the enclosed classroom space; the flanking modules act as permanent solar shields. This passive strategy eliminates mechanical cooling under most conditions.
