Module - Solar Response

Section showing solar exposure and shading response for Lahaina's intense west-facing conditions

Lahaina faces intense western sun — the same conditions that intensified the 2023 fire. The three-module assembly operates as a solar protection system: the steep 45-degree roof pitch deflects high-angle midday sun; adjacent shading modules block low-angle western afternoon sun; and the 8-foot wall height below the roof maintains shaded interior volume.

Performance

StrategyEffect
Steep roof pitch (~45°)Deflects high-angle midday sun
Adjacent shading modulesBlock low-angle western afternoon sun
Thatching / breathable roofReduces radiant heat transfer
8’ wall height below roofMaintains shaded interior volume
Estimated HVAC reduction~50%
Annual energy savings$25,000–$35,000

At no point does direct western sunlight penetrate the enclosed classroom space; the flanking modules act as permanent solar shields. This passive strategy eliminates mechanical cooling under most conditions.
