Module - Water Capture

Section showing rainwater collection through sloped roofs and shared gutters between modules

Each module captures rainwater through sloped roofs directing flow into gutters between connected units. A custom Y-shaped column connector at valley gutters merges structural and drainage functions. Subsurface volcanic gravel beds and storage tanks beneath module clusters capture water for non-potable reuse.

Performance data

MetricValue
Roof catchment area57,460 sq ft
Collection efficiency80%
Annual yield429,801 gallons
Daily average~1,178 gallons
Demand offset12–26%
Recommended storage160,000–250,000 gallons

This on-site harvesting is a regulatory necessity: West Maui’s Stage 2 water shortage prevents new water meter processing and restricts irrigation to one day per week. The school’s catchment demonstrates how public architecture contributes to distributed water infrastructure.
