Elementary School Floor Plan

Ground floor plan of the proposed elementary school showing modular classroom arrangement and community facilities

The school ground floor is organized as a mat-building — 85 modules totaling 57,460 sq ft (1.32 acres) — with classrooms, health services, cafeteria, gymnasium, and community spaces arranged around green courtyards. The plan is organized on a 26-foot structural grid rotated approximately 45 degrees to site boundaries, aligning with prevailing northeast trade winds while deflecting harsh western sun.

Program distribution

  • Enclosed (35%): 12 classrooms, gymnasium (4,056 sq ft), cafeteria, administration/health/first response, entrance hall
  • Semi-covered (35%): Covered walkways, decks, and threshold canopies — in Lahaina’s climate, these are functional program, not waste
  • Exterior (30%): Playgrounds, outdoor learning courtyards, landscape buffer

Emergency conversion

The building converts to an emergency response node: Zone 1 (boulevard edge) becomes coordination center, the gymnasium becomes large-capacity shelter, and the cafeteria handles emergency feeding — all operable independently from classroom zones.
