School design as community infrastructure; Hertzberger's approach to flexible, humane educational spaces informs the elementary school design

Herman Hertzberger contributed a pedagogical dimension to the mat typology through his schools of the 1970s and 1980s, where modularity supports non-hierarchical learning environments. The thesis draws on Hertzberger’s approach: circulation zones become extensions of the classroom; alcoves, platforms, and in-between spaces encourage informal learning and community interaction. Hertzberger’s work reinforces the mat as a civic structure — not simply a layout but a system capable of supporting social cohesion through distributed, interconnected units. The thesis adopts Hertzberger’s “learning street” concept as a key organizational element for the Lahaina Primary School. The source is also cited on schools functioning as neighborhood anchors.
